SANDY Study

The SANDY (Study Assessing Norms and Determinants of post-pregnancY vitals) study aims to better understand blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation in mothers during the postpartum period (4th Trimester). We are studying natural changes in blood pressure in the first 42 days after delivery, and your participation could help shape future care standards for postpartum moms.

How the Study Works

Your Role: You will complete a “Pre-Birth,” a “Post-Birth” and a “6-Weeks Postpartum” survey.

You will take biweekly blood pressure readings, heart rate, and oxygen saturation (if applicable)
for 6 weeks after your hospital discharge.
● When to Submit:
○ Every Wednesday and Sunday for 6 weeks.
● Where to Report:
○ Use our provided form to submit your data at the end of the six-week period.

Important: If you have any concerns, please report them to your healthcare provider
immediately.

What to Expect

Upon enrollment, you’ll receive a 4th Trimester Gift Bag with essential postpartum recovery tools and supportive resources to help you feel informed, prepared, and cared for during the early weeks after birth.

What is the purpose of the SANDY Study?

The SANDY Study aims to understand how blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation change naturally in the first six weeks after childbirth. This information will help researchers establish what is considered “normal” during the postpartum period, enhancing care for future mothers.

Am I eligible to participate in this study?

You are eligible to participate if you are a mother who:
1) Age ≥18 years;
2) Singleton pregnancy;
3) Gestational age 20–40 weeks at consent;
4) Plans U.S. delivery and postpartum residence through 42 days;
5) English-speaking;
6) Access to smartphone or device for data entry
7) Enrolled in prenatal care

What will I be asked to do if I join?

You will take your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation twice a week, three times daily (on Wednesdays and Sundays) for 6 weeks after your discharge from the hospital. You will report your vitals to your OB provider if you
have concerns and submit them to the research team weekly on an online form.
You will also be asked to complete three surveys (which will take less than 10 minutes), a pre-birth survey, a post-birth survey, and a 6-week postpartum
survey.

How do I submit my vital signs?

Every week, you will receive a form in your inbox (as well as reminders) that will ask you to fill in your vitals. This link will ask for your participant ID and will have dropdown options for Week # and Day.

How will my privacy be protected?

Your data will be completely anonymized before being shared with the research team. This means your personal information will not be linked to your health data in any way.

Will participating in the study affect my medical care?

No, participating in this study will not replace or interfere with the medical advice you receive from your healthcare providers. You should continue to consult your provider if you have any concerns or symptoms during the postpartum period.

What are the benefits of participating in the study?

Although we cannot guarantee direct benefits, participating in this study helps improve the quality of postpartum care for future mothers. Upon enrollment, you will receive a 4th Trimester Resource Kit. Upon completing the study, you will
receive a $50 Amazon Gift Card.

Can I withdraw from the study?

Yes, your participation is voluntary. You may withdraw from the study at any time, for any reason, without facing any penalties.

What should I do if I have concerns about my vital signs during the study?

If you have any concerns about your blood pressure, heart rate, or oxygen levels during the study, please contact your OB provider or healthcare professional immediately.
